Mexico Opens Probe into Alleged Unauthorized CIA Activity After Fatal Crash

(MENAFN) According to reports, Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office has launched an investigation into the presence of two US individuals allegedly linked to the CIA, following a fatal car accident in the northern border state of Chihuahua.

The Specialized Regional Control Prosecutor’s Office (FECOR), which handles federal-level crimes, will open multiple case files related to the incident. Authorities are examining whether the individuals were operating in Mexico without official authorization and whether their activities could constitute violations of national security laws.

In a statement, officials said the inquiry will also consider broader implications of foreign involvement in sensitive security operations. As noted in the announcement, “The investigation into the presence of foreign individuals, due to its characteristics and relevance, in addition to considering the possibility that crimes related to national security may have been committed, has been assigned to the Special Prosecutor’s Office for the Investigation and Litigation of Complex Cases within FECOR,”.

A separate line of investigation will focus on a drug laboratory that was dismantled on April 19 by Mexican security forces. Authorities suspect the deceased individuals may have had some involvement in operations connected to that case.

The incident has sparked political attention in Mexico, as it suggests potential coordination between local authorities and foreign intelligence personnel without formal approval, which could conflict with constitutional restrictions governing foreign operatives in the country.

The governor of Chihuahua, Maru Campos, denied prior knowledge that any foreign intelligence personnel were involved in security operations in the region. She has also initiated a separate internal inquiry to examine the circumstances surrounding the case, while distancing herself from the allegations.

Mexican prosecutors have indicated that if violations of national security laws are confirmed, all individuals found responsible will face legal consequences under domestic law.
